SHILLONG, July 20: The drama within the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) continued on Friday as Morning Mawsor from the opposition People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) withdrew his nomination just hours before the election of the Deputy Chairman of the district council.

It may be reminded that on Thursday Mawsor and Equator L. Nongrang from the Khasi Hills Democratic Alliance (KHDA) had filed their nomination at the chamber of the secretary of the district council legislative wing.

Speaking to reporters after the election, KHADC CEM HS Shylla said, “The the decision of the opposition members in the KHADC not to attend the house shows that they understand that they don’t have the numbers.”

He however urged the opposition to take part in the upcoming summer session of the KHADC which will be held on July 25. When asked, he informed that concerning the position of Chairman, the KHADC will have to wait for the announcement of a date for the election which will have to come from the Meghalaya Governor.

“As of now, the proceeding of the House will be taken care by the protem Chairman Teilinia Thangkhiew,” he said.

Earlier, HSPDP MDC Mansturdy Nongrem said, “The opposition members should have attended the house and by not attending it shows that they have no respect for the mandate of the people who have elected them to the KHADC.”

“We are elected as MDCs not for our own personnel interest; we are elected by the people to work for the interest and benefit of the people of the state,” he said. Similar, views were expressed by other MDCs.
