Essential items will be available, says Meghalaya F&CS Minister James Sangma

Shillong: Meghalaya Minister of Food and Civil Supplies James K Sangma on Thursday assured the citizens that the State government will ensure the availability of basic essentials, besides informing that shortage of commodities is primarily due to the panic buying.

Addressing the media in Shillong, Sangma said, “As of today, the market has somewhat stabilized and the Chief Minister has sanctioned Rs 26 çrore and Rs 35 lakh to lift foodgrains from the Food Corporation of India. He also informed the foodgrains meant for beneficiaries under the PDS and open market is already in the hands of the government for the month of April.

Moreover, the minister informed that one free LPG cylinder will be given free of cost to the PDS beneficiaries for the next three months and another additional 1 kg of rice free of cost.

Sangma also cautioned unscrupulous traders of strong action if they are found increasing the price of essential commodities. Proper price monitoring cells have been created and a helpline with the number 1067 has been created.
