SHILLONG: A three-day training-cum exposure visit on IFS (Integrated farming System) was organized by the Division of Technology Assessment-cum-Capacity departmewnt at the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam from November 23 to 25, 2021.

The training is held in collaboration with NABARD, South Garo Hills, Meghalaya.

The objective of the training is to acquaint the farmers about the different components of the IFS models and its prospects for doubling income of the farmers.

A total of 23 women farmers from South Garo Hills district of Meghalaya participated in the training.

The DAFS (Division of Animal & Fisheries Science) in collaboration with KVK, Ri-Bhoi also organized a national campaign on the 'Antimicrobial Resistance in Fish. A total 22 farmers from different parts of the Ri-Bhoi District of Meghalaya attended the programme.

In the programme, the relevance of the campaign was discussed in details with the farmers.

Dr S.K. Das, Principal Scientist talked about the Antimicrobial Resistance issues occurring in fisheries and aquaculture and urged the fish farmers to harness the natural immunity of fish like secretion of slimes instead of the use of antibiotics when disease outbreak occurs in fish.

Dr. S. Ghatak, Principal Scientist delivered a lecture on the rationale use of antibiotics in Livestock and Aquaculture production with emphasize on the use of antibiotics when there is a strong need and also advised the farmers to follow certain retention period after the antibiotic treatment so that minimum residues remain leftover in the final products.

The farmers were also informed about the emerging issues of antimicrobial resistance in aquaculture which is causing an emergency alarm for future.

They were also advised to opt for herbal medicines, immuno-stimulants, probiotics, prebiotics, bio-security measures, etc instead of antibiotic use.
