Shillong: Five people were injured in Langpih (Lumpi) when Assam Police lathicharged the residents who were trying to facilitate the workers of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MECL ) in erecting electricity poles in the area. According to sources, the incident took place this morning after the MECL workers were prevented from carrying on their work by Assam Police.

Angered by the act of the Assam Police, the villages confronted them and in turn the Assam police personnel resorted to a baton charge. The baton charge left five villagers injured and they were rushed to Nonglang Health centre in West Khasi Hills district.

It is learnt that the incident could not have taken an ugly turn had the MECL workers informed the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police (SP) before leaving for the place. It may be mentioned that the place is an ‘disputed area’ where both Assam and Meghalaya have staked claims. The States have agreed that till the dispute is settled both can carry on with developmental work.
