SHILLONG, July 5: The Sohra Government College Students Union (SGCSU) has urged the Education Minister of Meghalaya Lahkmen Rymbui to fulfill their past demands brought forward by the union which are still pending concerning the problems that the college is still facing.

Some of the demands placed before the Minister included the creation of new departments - Philosophy, Geography and Sociology - in the college, Bus service, hostel for boys and girls, introduction of Science and Commerce stream, fencing and security personnel.

Speaking to reporters after meeting the Minister, Ethybert Khongrymmai president SGCSU said, “Our government college when compared with other colleges in the state is still lagging behind in terms of varieties of departments hence there is an urgent need to create more department by the government.”

He informed that at present there is only one bus plying the periphery of Sohra town and it is difficult to maintain the time for the driver to cover the whole area as well as the students, therefore there is a need for another bus to cover the whole area of Sohra.

“We have also requested the government to construct and provide hostel facilities to the students,”

He also said that since the college only caters to arts students, the Union has also requested the Education Minister to introduce Science and Commerce stream in the college.

“There are many brilliant students who can excel in Science and Commerce however because most of them are from underprivileged families and can’t afford to enroll in a private institution hence they have to take up arts in the college,” he said.

He informed that the Minister has assured them that the matter will be taken up and a proper answer to their demands will probably be made within two months.

When asked, he said if the government does not fulfill their demands within 2 months then the Union will have to take up other means to pressurize the government to meet their demands.
