SHILLONG: In the midst of rising political speculation surrounding a possible Cabinet reshuffle in Meghalaya, the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) has confirmed internal discussions to rotate its lone Cabinet position between its two elected legislators. This potential shift adds a new layer of complexity to the dynamics within the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) 2.0 government.

HSPDP president K.P. Pangniang on Friday stated, “We are discussing the issue of cabinet sharing. A final decision will be taken only after proper consultation with both our MLAs.” He clarified that the matter has not yet been officially brought to the attention of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, as the party is still seeking internal consensus.

Currently, HSPDP is represented in the Cabinet by Shakliar Warjri, who holds the Sports and Youth Affairs portfolio. However, growing pressure within the party has prompted calls for its second MLA, Methodius Dkhar, to be given a ministerial role, setting the stage for a possible intra-party reshuffle.

The timing of this move is seen as strategic, with the MDA government nearing the midpoint of its term. Political observers anticipate a Cabinet reshuffle as early as September, as coalition partners—including the NPP, BJP, UDP, and now HSPDP—seek a rebalancing of power within the alliance.

While top leaders of the MDA continue to maintain a calculated silence, HSPDP’s public stance suggests underlying shifts within the coalition, potentially foreshadowing significant political developments in the coming weeks.
