SHILLONG: Leaders of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) central body and Shillong city on Thursday requested the police to immediately take action to catch the culprit involved in “assaulting” one of their executive member and an Assamese youth.

It may be mentioned that on October 9, the council constituted a branch at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU). However, after the function, a member of the newly-constituted body at the university was assaulted by unidentified youths at around 11 pm.

Speaking to reporters after meeting with Shillong Superintendent of Police Stephan Rynjah, HYC general secretary N Sawian said, “The council had filed an FIR yesterday. Today we are here to demand that the police to take immediate action and arrest the goons who assaulted our member.”

He informed that as per the account of the victim, a group of 10 people with masks and carrying iron rods entered the hostel and stated the assault and further threatened the member to resign from the HYC.

“One youth studying at the university from Assam who was a roommate of our member was also assaulted,” he said.

When asked, he said that at present the police have provided security and the hostel is under police protection.

Later, the leaders of HYC went and met the member who was assaulted.
