Hynniewtrep Youth Council suggests changing name of new district

SHILLONG: There is an immediate need to change the name of the district from Eastern West Khasi Hills. This was suggested by Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), North West Khasi Hills at a press conference in the city on Tuesday.

The council has further suggested that the government should instead name the new district as Central Khasi Hills or North West Khasi Hills with Mairang as its headquarter. The president of HYC, North West Khasi Hills, Joplang Kharnaior said the name Eastern West district was not suitable.

The president of Nongkhlaw circle of HYC, Ebel June Nongrang said though the organization was not against the creation of the district, the name Eastern West was not desirable. The Chief Minister Conrad Sangma will inaugurate the new district in the presence of local MLA and Assembly Speaker on Wednesday.
