SHILLONG: Meghalaya leader of Opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma on Wednesday, flayed the illegal transportation of coal in the State and asked as to how government machineries are being used to facilitate it.

Speaking to media persons, Dr Sangma alleged Chief Minister Conrad Sangma of being directly involved in the whole process.

“The kind of modus operandi that is in operation today under the direct command of the Chief Minister and his other people who are partners in crime is going to create a dangerous situation in the State in the years to come,” the Opposition leader said.

He alleged that the Government has been engaged in changing the inventory of the stock of mined coal in the State even as he stated that it even went to the extent of submitting such claims before the Supreme Court to ultimately misinform the apex Court and get certain kind of leverage for further transportation of coal which does not exist.

The Opposition leader further said that he will take up the issue with NGT and the NGT-appointed committee, and ask them to verify all those claims which have been placed before it as part of the inventory.

“There is no dearth of means to get the correct information. Without loss of time this has to be verified otherwise the whole issue of existence of any tribunal or authorities to regulate the errant behaviour of people engaged in illegal mining will be mockery of the existing law,” the Opposition leader said.

He also criticized the rampant and frequent transfers and postings of officials which he alleged are being done to facilitate these illegalities.

“This government is going to create an unprecedented future where the State will be in chaotic condition,” the Opposition leader said.
