SHILLONG: A meeting on the topic of the impact of tourist traffic on sustainable tourism was organised by the Meghalaya Sustainable Development Council (MSDC) was held at the Durbar Hall of Mawsmai village, under Sohra Civil Sub-Division recently.

The meeting was attended by Teinwell Dkhar, Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, Member of District Council Shella constituency, Hector Marwein Retired IAS and Chairman, MSDC, Ravi Kant, IAS, Isawanda Laloo, Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District, SDO Civil, BDO, officials from various departments in the Sohra Civil Sub-Division, hoteliers, headmen, sordar and other stakeholders of the tourism sector in the Sub-Division.

The objective of the meeting was to highlight and address the impact of tourist footfall on the environment in order to ensure that the beauty and cleanliness of Sohra is preserved.

Ravi Kant, IAS also gave a presentation on waste management which illustrated the methods by which waste can be converted into wealth.

There was also an open discussion with the various stakeholders where several issues regarding the impact of tourism were discussed.
