Infighting Led To Poor Show: KHNAM Chief Adelbert Nongrum

SHILLONG: After a disappointing show in the just concluded KHADC election in which the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) was unable to win a single seat, party president Adelbert Nongrum blamed the poor performance to the recent infighting within the party which had split KHNAM in half.

“The party had to suffer ahead of the district council polls as there were plenty of problems within the party and some party members had even left the KHNAM. However, despite this, the Election Commission of India (ECI) had recognized me as the leader of the party,” Adelbert Nongrum told The Sentinel.

According to Nongrum, because of this, the party was divided into two and the others who had left KHNAM also claimed that they are the leaders of the party despite the ECI recognizing me as the official leader of the party.

“This has created confusion within the minds of the voters as one person claims that he is the leader of KHNAM and the other also claimed the same,” he said. Nongrum also pointed out that the other factor which had affected the party and its candidates in not being able to win a single seat in the KHADC is due to money power available with other political parties.

When asked if there is an intension to fold the party after the disappointing council polls, he said, “This is completely out of the question. We have recently just changed the colours of our party flag and we intend to further strengthen the party.”

He said that the next objective of the party is to strengthen KHNAM in different parts of the State and become a fighting force once again in future elections. Nongrum also pointed out that the party will be contesting the Lok Sabha polls in which THS Bonny will contest the election from KHNAM.
