Jaintia Students Movement Central Body Demands Quick Repair of Road

SHILLONG: Taking strong cognizance of the difficulties faced by the commuters and the impending threat to life of the people, the Jaintia Students Movement (JSM) central body on Sunday has asked the office of the Deputy Commissioner, West Jaintia Hills district, to take up the issue of ordering the immediate repair of National Highway 6 from Mookyndur to Thadlaskein on a war footing with the State Government. The student body also warned that if the administration fails in this regard, they would be compelled to resort to another course of action.

In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, West Jaintia Hills district, the JSM said the only connectivity between the State of Meghalaya and the rest of the country is the road which falls under National Highway 6.

However, it is a matter of grave concern to observe that the road conditions of the said highway from Mookyndur Village under Nartiang Assembly constituency (till the border of West Jaintia Hills district and East Khasi Hills district) till Thadlaskein under Nartiang Assembly constituency is in a highly deplorable condition, the memorandum stated.

“We have observed that their several potholes all along the National Highway in the above stretch of roads pose an impending threat to the life and safety of the commuters. And due to the deplorable conditions of the roads, several trucks broke down resulting in traffic jams for hours,” said the student body from the Jaintia Hills region.
