SHILLONG: Even after 19 days when the two convicts — Small Phawa and Kwall Laloo — mysteriously escaped from the clutches of security personnel of Jowai Civil Hospital, the search team has failed to nab them. Well-placed sources in the Police department told The Sentinel that they have not yet got any clues as to the whereabouts of the two escapees. This is despite the fact that they have generated intelligence inputs about the probable areas where the duo may be hiding.

Mentionably, though four persons were picked up for interrogation in the past few days; they were later let off. These are the persons suspected to have been in contact with the two fugitives. "We picked up four persons for questioning; but they could not give any vital lead," stated West Khasi Hills district Superintendent of Police (SP) Bikram Marak. He, however, added that the phone numbers of the duo as well as the suspected female aquaintance have been put under intense surveilance.

Other sources involved in the search team said that the two convicts have parted ways and hiding in different areas of Jaintia Hills district. "They are no more in the same location and are not spotted in the houses of their respective families or friends,"stated the source.

Small Phawa has been convicted under POSCO for raping a minor while Kwall Phawa has been convicted for murder. They were lodged in Jowai district Jail, West Jaintia Hills district before being taken to Civil Hospital after they complain of illness. Both dramatically escaped when the security guards ahd escort them to a tea stall. The security guards have been suspended and the inquiry report has established that it is a sheer case of connivance.
