Justice Saikia highlights importance of Constitution, Shillong

Shillong: The chairperson of the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) Justice Aftab Hussain Saikia stressed on the importance of knowing the Constitution.

He was addressing an awareness programme on Human Rights at St John’s Bosco Shrine Hall, Maraikapon, Sohra.

Saikia enlightened the participants on the Right to Liberty, Equality and Dignity. He said these rights are enshrined in the Constitution of India to safeguard the citizens from any violation of human rights.

The Chairperson of the MHRC also encouraged everyone to gain as much knowledge as possible on these issues and to approach the Commission whenever there are any cases of violation under the purview of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.

The programme saw a huge turnout with participation from students of various schools and colleges, representatives from village councils, women’s organisations and officers from the different government departments.

The objective of the program was to highlight the various rights and legal remedies which the public can resort to whenever their basic human rights were being infringed upon.

The programme was followed by an interactive session whereby teachers and students posed questions and exchanged ideas on various topics relating to Human Rights.
