KHADC areas outside MUDA by-laws purview

Shillong, May 15: The state government has decided in principal that the areas that are within the jurisdiction of the Autonomous District Council and outside the purview of the Municipal Board will not be affected by the MUDA buildings by-laws.

The decision was taken at the tripartite meeting held between the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, KHADC and a delegation of the Synjuk Ki Nongsynshar Shnong Ka Bri U Hynniewtrep (SNSBH) which is a conglomeration of traditional headmen, in the city on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said, “We have decided in principal that the that the areas which are within the jurisdiction of the Autonomous District Council and outside the purview of the Municipal Board will not be affected by the MUDA buildings by-laws.”

Conrad, however said that there are some legal provisions that need to be looked into and in the meantime the law department is going through all the aspects of the legal provisions but in the meantime the MUDA Building By-law will not be applicable in the Sixth Schedule areas.

The Chief Minister also said that the state government will also direct the MeECL and PHE Department to ensure that the provision that are required are also relaxed because people are suffering.

He further informed that the town planning committees will be needed to be put up by the District Council and that the Council and the DCA department will be sitting together to make the laws for the town planning committees but in the meantime the MUDA act will not be applicable in the 6th Schedule areas.

When asked about the regulation of building construction outside the purview of MUDA , he said , “Once the District Council frame those laws through the town planning committees that we put up, the Council will look into it.”
