Khasi Author’s Society (KAS) hails Assembly resolution on Khasi language

Shillong: An elated Khasi Author’s Society (KAS) termed the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly resolution to seek constitutional recognition of the Khasi language as a new stepping towards the right direction. A day after the State Assembly unanimously passed the resolution, the members of the Khasi Authors Society (KAS) told newsmen that the thirty years of movement to gain recognition has further gain momentum with the policy makers resolved to share the mantle with them. “Our demand for the inclusion of the Khasi language in the eight scheduled of the constitution has taken a new milestone”, stated the President of KAS D.R Lyngdoh, even as he added that their optimism has grown further because the 60 legislators unanimously vouched for the cause.

He further stated that with the active pursuance of the government the KAS hopes that a bill to incorporate Khasi language in the Eight scheduled of the Indin constitution will feature in the winter session of the Parlaiment. Claiming the khasi language has all the criteria as enlisted by the Union Ministry of Home, Nonglait said, “We have 14 lakhs khasi speaking population, we have our own script and literature besides being the link language with many people outside the periphery”. Nonglait said the the assembly resolution will boost to the overall betterment of the khasis in every sphre.
