Khasi authors urged to work for standardisation of words

SHILLONG: The authors in Khasi were reminded about the need for standardisation of Khasi words to avoid any confusion among the aspiring students and conflicts among the scholars. This appeal was made by the Minister of Arts and Culture AL Hek, as the Chief Guest during the 41st foundation day anniversary of the Khasi Authors' Society at the Arts and Culture Hall, State Central Library here on Friday.

In his address, Hek acknowledged the role of his officials in the department for providing an office space for the Khasi Authors' Society at the State Central Library complex. The occasion was also graced by the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), T Chyne, as the Guest of Honour.

KHADC CEM Chyne emphasised the need for a comprehensive dictionary in Khasi; and announced the support of the Council towards the project initiated by the Khasi Authors' Society.

It has become a tradition in the Khasi Authors' Society that the book release is always held every year; and this year, three books were released by both the dignitaries along with W Nongsiej, Director of Arts and Culture.

The books are 'Ki Sur Mieng Ka Ri Umsnam' by Andreas Sun, a quiz book — 'Ka Jingkyntip na Kotbah' — by Hamles Mylliemumlong, and two books 'Ki Khun Samla, Ki Longkmie Longkpa' and 'Ka Sor Shillong' by Kitbor W Nongrum. The keynote address was delivered by Dr DRL Nonglait, president of the Khasi Authors' Society. On the occasion, a recitation programme was rendered by Andreas Sun and a folk song was performed by veteran singer Chosterfield Khongwir. In view of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the attendance of members of the Khasi Authors' Society was restricted to around 50 including invitees and media persons.
