Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council EC Collapses during Winter Session

SHILLONG: The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) was defeated in a trust vote brought by the Opposition Congress during the Winter Session.

The Opposition consisted of nine Congress MDC and an independent Grace Mary Kharpuri.

It may be mentioned that the UDA is an alliance comprising of the MDCs of the UDP, PDF, NPP, HSPDP and independent MDCs. The Executive Committee (EC) of the UDA which was led by United Democratic Party (UDP) MDC from Shella Teinwell Dkhar collapsed after council chairman, PN Syiem voted in favour of the no-confidence motion following a tie.

During the trust vote, PDF MDC from Umsning, Macdalyne S Mawlong and NPP MDC from Laban, Mitchel Wankhar did not stand despite the request on the part of the Deputy CEM, Pyniaid Sing Syiem.

In the House of 29, both the ruling coalition and the opposition got 14 votes each during the voting. The deciding vote of the chairman in the end tilted the scales in favour of the opposition.

The election of the new Chief Executive Member will be held on Friday.
