SHILLONG: The Khasi Students' Union (KSU) of South West Khasi Hills has demanded that the MLAs and MDCs of three constituencies intervene into the State government's decision to allow employers to bring in migrant labourers into the State.

A memorandum on this regard was submitted to MLAs – HM Shangpliang, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar and Pius Marwein and MDCs Alvin Khyriem Sawkmie and Carnes Sohshang on Thursday.

"We demand you to suggest the State government to focus more on providing skill training to local people instead of bringing labourers from outside the State," KSU-SWKH president Forwardman Nongrem said in the memorandum.

He said the union outrightly rejects the standard operating procedures (SOPs) issued by the Labour department for the purpose.

"The so-called highly-skilled labourers from outside and the SOPs of the department will not only increase inflow of influx into the State but also poses serious threat to the health safety of the people in view of the COVID-19 pandemic," he said.

Nongrem further said that the government's decision would only encourage influx in the name of highly-skilled labourers.
