KSU slams contractors for slow road construction

SHILLONG, May 17: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has blamed contractors for the slow progress of work in the construction of the road from Rangblang-Wahkaji to Phlangdiloin in West Khasi Hills district.

According to the Umdohlun unit of the KSU, the said road has only been carpeted with soil and no actual construction in the form of blacktopping has started yet.

This particular road is being funded by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to the tune of Rs 4.5 crore.

“From time to time we have met the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the KHADC, Pynshngain N Syiem who informed us that this amount of Rs 4.5 crore is only for the first phase out of the Rs 25 crore that the Council has earmarked for this project,” Dusterwell K Lyngdoh, Finance Secretary of the KSU Umdohlun circle said.

According to Lyngdoh, the CEM has even assured that in the subsequent phases the KHADC will repair as well as black top the road.

“Not only that, Syiem even told us that the Rs 4.5 crore (allotted in the first phase), is not only for laying stone chips or soil along the road but also for black topping the broken portions,” the finance secretary said.

He said that what the students’ body and the people of the area have found is that there is a lackadaisical attitude on the part of the two contractors in constructing the Rangblang-Wahkaji to Phlangdiloin road.

The KSU also said that the laying of soil by the contractors has made the road muddy and is inconveniencing those travelling through this route, especially during the rainy season.

“The Rs 4.5 crore sanctioned by the Council in the first phase — had it been used for blacktopping, we would have expected that around 8 km to 9 km portion of the road would have been completed by now and would have been beneficial for the people of the area,” Lyngdoh said.

The KSU has also demanded that the CEM should take up the matter seriously so that the fund released in the first phase would be of benefit for the people.
