SHILLONG: The Lady Hydari Park — home to many animals and birds — has been closed to the public since the day lockdown was imposed in the State due to COVID-19. However, not a single inmate has died during these past few months because of the pandemic.

Speaking to The Sentinel on this issue, Divisional Forest Officer Khasi Hills Wildlife Division, Shillong, Anu P James informed, "During the initial phase of the lockdown, it was quite challenging for us — especially with respect to ensuring uninterrupted feed supply for our animals housed in the park. This is despite the fact that we had anticipated the situation, and increased our stock of dry ration. Arrangements were also made to source fresh fruitsand vegetables besides fish and meat. "Vehicle-passes were issued to our feed suppliers so that there is no hindrance in getting feed supply.

"These precautions helped us in managing the situation; and animal's welfare was not compromised even a bit."

When asked on the revenbue aspect of the Park, the DFO said that it goes to the State treasury and the allotment of expenses comes from the Government On the endangered species present at the Park, the DFO informed that there are 22 mammals, two birds, and one reptile. Other than the endangered species, the Park also has 46 other bird species and 12 mammals.

She adeed, "We have been following the SoPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for the Zoological Parks to control transmission of COVID-19 to the wild animals since the first week of April itself. There was a case of a felid (i.e., tiger) contracting COVID in the Bronx Zoo in USA in April 5, 2020. Since then, biosafety and biosecurity measures have been adopted.

"All the personnel entering the zoo premises including the zoo keepers, workers, sweepers, suppliers of feed and fodder must wash their hands. The zoo feeders are screened for zoonotic diseases. Even before the lockdown, no one having cough, cold, or fever symptoms was allowed to enter." She added, "All the animals inside the Park are monitored for abnormal signs, and veterinary care is provided."
