Shillong: The reconstituted executive body of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) vowed to take the fight against illegal immigrants to further heights with its demand for the introduction of the Inner Line Permit (ilp) being the uncompromising component of the movement.

The influential KSU held its elections to the executive body on Saturday in Shillong. Lambokstar Marngar got reelected unopposed as the president. The sitting vice president and general secretary of the union were also elected uncontested.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday evening, Marngar said the road for the next three years is to take up the issue of influx and illegal immigrants with new intensity and fresh vigour. “In this pursuit, the introduction of the Inner Line Permit stands upfront because the voice of the people is apparent enough that they can’t wait any longer”, he said.

Stating that the Government of India should seriously take up the demand for the implementation of ilp, Marngar said that people of the State are running out of patience. “We will pursue our fight for the legitimate demands in a democratic way but I am scared that if the government continues with its apathy, the youths may be prompted to take the law into their own hands”, stated the re-elected KSU president.

Reminding about the State Assembly resolution that unanimously endorsed the implementation of the ilp as well as the collective public voice they garnered through a series of public meetings throughout the State, the KSU leader also said that the implementation of the ilp is imperative after the CAA. He said that the CAA is already a license given by the Union Government to foreigners and it is on this ground that we will take proactive measures to check illegal immigration into the State.

Meanwhile, there was 97 per cent turnout of eligible voters to the election monitored by ex-members of the union. Ten members from each unit are chosen as voters. Of the 4,500 eligible voters, 4,400 turned up to elect the member’s of the new body for the next three years. There were 27 other contestants for the other posts.
