SHILLONG: Incessant rains in Meghalaya have caused landslides, and flooding and leading to the loss of 11 lives and at least two missing on Friday.

In the Mawsynram constituency, East Khasi Hills a total of seven lives were lost.

According to authorities in Dangar village, of Mawsynram five members of a family lost their lives including a mother and her four children. The father is grievously injured.

In Ryngku village a 14-year-old boy died and in Betkora A (Ryngku) one died, in Kenmynsaw two persons were reported missing.

In Baghmara South Garo Hills district, three lives were lost including that of a minor, there are also reports that another woman's life was lost in Siju in the same district due to landslides caused by heavy rains.

Meanwhile, Sohra on June 17 received 972.00 mm of rainfall. This is the third-highest 24-hour rainfall recorded. The highest-ever record is 1563.3 mm on June 16, 1995 and the second highest was 973.8 mm on June 5, 1956.

So far, since Thursday a total of 16 lives have been lost due to heavy rains. On Thursday four minor siblings were killed in a landslide that occurred in Nongspung Laitlarem village under Mawphlang C & RD Block. While in Jashiar village, South West Khasi Hills district Sentimerry Myrthong 24 year old was washed away in a landslide.
