SHILLONG: All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) legislator and leader of the opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma has said that there has been a concerted, sustained and sincere effort from all concerned to draw the attention of the government to all instances of irregularities and corruption in the state and to put a stop to it.

"The level of corruption is palpable and the worst thing is that the government with impunity is in a denial mode," the leader of the opposition said.

When asked that the government, on matters of corruption, when brought before has always demanded proof, the AITC leader said that for any offence which is cognizable, the authorities have to take cognizance.

"Denying cognizance of these instances of irregularities and corruptions means they are acting as an accused. By default, they are telling the people that they are the accused. That's why they want to deny," Sangma said.

Sangma said that corruption has destroyed many nations in the world and one doesn't want Meghalaya too to go the same way.

He said that the corruption which is visible must end because people do not want a disastrous future.

The leader of the opposition said that there must be a collective effort from all political parties that they promise the people of the state that Meghalaya should be free of corruption.

"Meghalaya should not be infamous for all the instances of corruption," he said.

He said that if there is no truth in the allegations, the government should go "hammer and tongs" and initiate legal actions against people making such accusations.

"Have they shown the guts to go after those people who are pointing fingers against them? That itself is indicative of what's happening," the leader of the opposition asked.
