SHILLONG: The Meghalaya government on Friday decided to extend the lockdown in East Khasi Hills district till 5 am on June 7.

Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong informed that the review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma also decided that containment measures throughout the State would be in place until further orders.

"The government has entrusted the concerned deputy commissioners to impose restrictions in their respective districts and SDO (Civil) in their jurisdictions depending on the local situation," Prestone Tynsong informed.

Meanwhile, for the first time in weeks, the number of new recoveries outnumbered the new infections even as Meghalaya recorded 20 more COVID deaths in the last 24 hours.

Director of Health Services (MI) Dr Aman War informed that of the 20 deaths, 17 were recorded in the East Khasi Hills district. West Jaintia Hills, Ri-Bhoi and West Garo Hills districts recorded one death each.

With the latest recorded figures, the State now has 544 total COVID deaths, 8025 active cases and 25,266 total recovered cases.

With the State recording more recovered cases than new infections, this had helped in bringing down the number of active cases from 8,255 on Thursday to 8,025 on Friday.

Of the 731 new cases, East Khasi Hills recorded 346, Ri-Bhoi (147), West Garo Hills (69), West Jaintia Hills (32), East Jaintia Hills and South West Garo Hills and West Khasi Hills (27) each, South West Khasi Hills (21), East Garo Hills (15), South Garo Hills (11) and North Garo Hills nine.

Of the 941 new recoveries, East Khasi Hills recorded the most with 661, West Garo Hills (70), Ri-Bhoi (61), South West Garo Hills (46), East Jaintia Hills (26), West Khasi Hills (23), East Garo Hills (22), South Garo Hills (12), North Garo Hills (10), West Jaintia Hills seven and South West Khasi Hills three.

The active cases in East Khasi Hills is 3884 which has significantly come down due to an increase in recovered cases in the last 24 hours. Among other districts, Ri-Bhoi has 1310 active cases,

West Garo Hills (654), West Jaintia Hills (641), South West Garo Hills (414), East Jaintia Hills (228), South West Khasi Hills (227), West Khasi Hills (204), North Garo Hills (172), South Garo Hills (146), and East Garo Hills (145).
