Marriage ceremonies allowed in religious place: Meghalaya government

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya government on Monday allowed the solemnisation of marriages in the places of worship.

Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong informed that the government considered to allow conducting of marriage ceremonies in the various places of worship after a request was made by the various religious groups.

"So on their request we have accepted this relaxation for performing marriage rituals," the Deputy Chief Minister said.

It may be mentioned that recently, the State government rescinded its order of June 5 to reopen the places of worship on June 14.

Tynsong informed that the respective religious leaders would have to submit applications for permission to solemnise the marriages.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya Health and Family Welfare Minister, A. L. Hek informed that a total of 14147 samples have been tested for COVID-19 out of which 13303 tested negative and result awaited are 800.

So far the State has recorded 44 COVID-19 cases, one died of the virus, 26 have recovered and 17 are active cases.

Hek also informed that a total of 15454 stranded residents have returned back to Meghalaya.

Meanwhile, Tynsong informed that the review meeting also discussed about reopening of guest houses, hotels, home stays, restaurants and tourists spots.

"The government has decided to direct Deputy Commissioners to have close consultation with stakeholders up to the village level," the Deputy Chief Minister said.

Tynsong also informed that on Tuesday, the State government officials and the district council and officials of Syiem of Mylliem are going to inspect Ïewduh.

It may be mentioned that the biggest commercial hub in the State has been closed for the past three months since the lockdown started.
