

SHILLONG: The candidates participating in the assembly polls in the state of Meghalaya include some of the wealthiest politicians with several declaring properties worth crores of rupees.
The speaker of the Meghalaya state assembly Metbah Lyngdoh is the richest among them.
Metbah Lyndoh, the United Democratic Party candidate for the Mairang constituency declared assets worth Rs 146.31 Cr in his documents. His wealth saw an increase of nearly 68% from Rs 87.26 crores in 2018. He is also the chief of the United Democratic Party which is one of the major local parties in the state.
The chief minister of the National People’s Party led the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance, Conrad K Sangma reported his assets at a worth of Rs 14.06 Cr which is a 164% increase from Rs 5.33 Cr in 2018.
Sniawbhalang Dhar, the Urban Affairs Minister during the previous government has reported the highest growth in his assets in the previous five-year term. He is reappearing from the Nartiang constituency for the National People’s Party. According to the documents, he had assets worth Rs 6 Cr in 2018 which increased to Rs 45 Cr in 2023, which is around a 607 % growth over the 5-year term of the government
James PK Sangma’s assets have also seen a 568% growth in his total worth in the past five years. He held the portfolio of Power Minister during the Conrad Sangma government in Meghalaya. His declared assets worth Rs 7 Crs in 2018 and Rs 53 Crs in 2023.
The assets of Mukul Sangma and his wife DD Shira also saw an increase of 108% from Rs 13.59 Cr to Rs 28.21 Cr.
A report from a study conducted about the assets of the elected representatives showed a growth of 77% on average. This study was conducted on the candidates who had won in the previous election and participated in the upcoming assembly polls.
