Meet On Traditional Medicine At Hawkers Free Zone Market, Golflink

SHILLONG: Governor of Meghalaya Tathagata Roy attended a programme on scientific discussion of ‘Indigenous System of Medicines’ organized by MEBAAI Tribal Health & Wellness Centre held at the Hawkers Free Zone Market, Golflink, here on Friday. The programme was chaired by Meghalaya Health Minister AL Hek.

Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, the Governor said that traditional system of medicine using herbs and plants has been in existence for a very long time.

To promote the potential of the indigenous traditional medicinal plants of the State, the Governor stressed the needs of standardization, documentation, codification and systematization in the academic research centre. He also added that treatment with medicinal plants have minimal side-effects.

In insuring affordable healthcare for all people in the State, Pravin Bakshi, Secretary Health and Family Welfare, in his introductory speech informed that 550 traditional healers have been trained by the Bio Resources Development Council, an institute of the State Government, out of the 1,800 traditional healers which have been registered and documented by the State Government. Earlier, a short presentation was also presented about traditional medicines by Dr H Bani, a Khasi healer.
