GUWAHATI: The much-anticipated Megha Kayak Festival is set to commence on Thursday at the Shillong Whitewater Village in Umtham, Meghalaya. This marks the sixth edition of the festival, where kayaking enthusiasts can anticipate a thrilling blend of adventure and the breathtaking beauty of Meghalaya's Umtrew River.

The Megha Kayak Festival is designed to test kayakers' skills and courage as they navigate the river's intricate twists and turns, creating unforgettable moments on the water. Organized by the Ri Bhoi Water Sports & Tourism Corporation Society Limited and proudly sponsored by the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Meghalaya, this year's festival has also partnered with the Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association (IKCA) to enhance its significance.

The festival offers an exciting array of events in two formats: the Down River Sprint and the Canoe Slalom Cross, featuring various categories catering to both men and women across diverse age groups and expertise levels.

For athletes participating in the intermediate category, registration will take place on October 11. The general registration desk at Shillong White Water Village will open from 1 pm on October 12, allowing participants to officially sign up for the exciting water sports events.

The Megha Kayak Festival aspires to be the largest festival of its kind in the Indian subcontinent, with significant representation from India and Nepal. Over the years, this grand event has effectively promoted adventure tourism and positioned Meghalaya as a premier water sports destination on the global stage.

An outstanding feature of the Megha Kayak Festival is its dedication to encouraging female participation in adventure sports. Given Meghalaya's rich cultural heritage emphasizing the role of women, it is well-positioned to lead the way. The prize money for each category remains consistent for both men and women.

This year's Megha Kayak Festival promises an unforgettable adventure, merging the excitement of water sports with the natural splendor of Meghalaya. Participants and spectators alike can anticipate a unique and thrilling experience.
