Guwahati: A resident of Assam was arrested by West Garo Hills police after he was accused of allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl.

The accused allegedly raped the girl in a cashew nut plantation at around 8 pm on August 22, said sources.

The clan members of the victim filed a case on August 29 after she related the incident to her family.

Investigation revealed that the accused, identified as Maidul Islam, was married to a woman from WGH and had another wife in Assam. Maidul was living with his second wife in Garo Hills.

He promised to marry the victim before taking advantage of her and hid his marital status.

The victim informed her grandfather about the incident with Islam, after which they filed an FIR.

WGH Superintendent of Police, DR MGR Kumar said, "We have arrested the accused, and he is in custody. The case falls under POCSO and details of what happened are being investigated."
