Guwahati: Khliehriat Police Station and Khlirhriat Women Police Station in East Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya have been closed down after the detection of COVID-19 cases on Sunday, July 26.

"It is hereby informed that Khliehriat Police Station and Khlirhriat Women Police Station in East Jaintia Hills have been temporarily closed after few COVID-19 cases have been reported. Police officials of both the police stations have been placed under medical observation and at present, all official works of both the police stations have been shifted to Ladrymbai out-post", G.K. Iangrai, the Assistant Inspector General of Police (A), Meghalaya, said in a release.

Iangrai further informed that the East Jaintia hills police stations are being disinfected as per protocols and these establishments will only start functioning afyter being declared fit for occupation. "The general public residing within the jurisdiction of these police stations are hereby requested to kindly approach Ladrymbai outpost for any urgent requirement or assistance", he further added.

Earlier, a police official of the Saipung police station in East Jaintia Hills tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday, July 12. The police station was closed down temporarily during which the authorities did the needful to ensure the containment of a potential outbreak.

The detection of these cases among the police in East Jaintia Hills police has been reported at a time when the entire state of Meghalaya is witnessing a massive boom in the number of COVID-19 cases. Due to this, a 3-day lockdown has been imposed in the Shillong urban agglomeration, the economic hub of the Northeast Indian state. The Government of Meghalaya has once again decided to impose a total lockdown in the Shillong agglomeration from midnight of July 26 to midnight of July 29 to mitigate the spread of the dreaded virus.

At the same time, many places across the state have been declared as containment areas and residents have been strictly warned against venturing outside. Meanwhile, the tracing of the volatile zones has resulted in the Government marking 71 areas as "covid clusters."

It needs mention here that the death toll in the state mounted to 5 following the death of a 67-year old woman who succumbed to the infection at NEIGRIHMS on Thursday night.
