Meghalaya Administration High Alert after Publication of Draft NRC in Assam

Shillong, July 30: The release of the National registration of citizenship (NRC) on Monday in Assam caused the Meghalaya administration to be on high alert. Soon after the announcement that around forty lakh people were not included in the final draft NRC, a high level meeting was convened by Meghalaya Chief Secretary Y Shering. It was attended by Director General of Police (DGP) Swaraj Bir Sing, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Peter W Ingti and Commissioner and Secretary Home S Kharlyngdoh.

While apprehensions are rife that the rejected people may make way and try to mingle with the mixed population of the plain belts of Garo Hills and some other areas in the state, the DGP after the meeting said, “I could tell you that we are making tight vigil and actions will be taken on any trouble mongers or alleged infiltrators.”

“The Superintendents of Police (SPs) of the bordering districts of Meghalaya have been liasoning with their state counterparts to prevent occurance of any unwanted incident”, adding, “We are watching the developments and let us see how it evolves”.

The Khasi Students Union (KSU) has also expressed its apprehension that the NRC will have its effect on Meghalya, even as the union exhorted on the government to take effective steps to check flow of immigrants. “I can tell you that those rejected entry in the NRC in Assam would use Meghalaya as another refuge. Not Nagaland or Arunachal Pradesh that have the inner Line Permit (ILP) provisions”, the KSU president Lambok Marngar stated on Monday.
