SHILLONG: Recently, a report has been released by the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) stating that more than 70% of the MLAs in Meghalaya district acquire asset worth rupees crores and are crorepatis. 

Along with that, 2% of lawmakers have declared criminal cases against themselves. "Out of 41 sitting MLAs analysed, 29 (71%) are crorepatis. 14 (70%) out of 20 MLAs from the National People's Party, 5 (63%) out of 8 MLAs from the All India Trinamool Congress, 6 (75%) out of 8 MLAs from United Democratic Party, 3 (100%) out of 3 MLAs from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and 1 (50%) out of 2 from Peoples Democratic Front MLAs have declared assets valued at more than ₹1 crore," the ADR report added. 

The report further highlighted that, the minimum acquisition of each sitting MLA in Meghalaya are approximately worth Rs 7.80 crore. Eight MLAs of the United Democratic Party acquire assets of Rs 14.45 crore, the report added. 

Eight MLAs of TMC posses properties worth Rs 6.05 crore on an average basis. Along with that, three MLA of the BJP, owns assets worth Rs 6.39 crore and two from Peoples Democratic Front posses properties worth Rs 1.90 crore. 

The ADR along with Meghalaya Election Watch has scrutinised criminal, financial and other backgrounds in details of 41 sitting MLAs. Currently, 19 post are still not booked in the state assembly of Meghalaya. The rest occupied are filled with 20 seats from NPP, 8 from TMC and 8 seats from United Democratic Party. 

Out of the 41 MLAs, 18 are qualified only till 8-12, and 23 are graduate or above. The report also took a dig on the male and female dominance in the assembly scenario, where it highlighted that, out of 41 MLAs only 2 MLAs are women and rest all are men. The state of Meghalaya is going to contest the poll on 27 the of February, 2023.
