SHILLONG: With incumbent Rajya Sabha MP Dr. W.R. Kharlukhi officially opting out of a second term, speculation is intensifying over who will be the National People’s Party (NPP) nominee for Meghalaya’s lone Upper House seat in 2026. Two prominent figures have emerged at the center of the political buzz — former Lok Sabha MP Agatha Sangma and former state minister James P.K. Sangma.
According to party insiders, the NPP is contemplating approaching Agatha Sangma, who previously represented Tura in the Lok Sabha, as a potential candidate for the Rajya Sabha. Her name is being floated as a strong and acceptable choice among top party functionaries.
At the same time, there is strong speculation surrounding her brother, James P.K. Sangma, a former legislator from Dadenggre and ex-cabinet minister. However, sources suggest James may be reluctant to contest for the Upper House seat. He is reportedly more interested in continuing his career in state politics. After narrowly losing his assembly seat in the 2023 elections, many believe he is keen on making a political comeback at the state level.
Although discussions within the NPP are still at an early stage, the party is reportedly weighing its options carefully. Speaking to the media about the rumours, Agatha Sangma clarified, “As of now, we do not have any discussion on the Rajya Sabha seat. These are just speculations. But what I can say is, whoever my party decides on, I am ready to support that candidate. It’s the party’s decision.”
With no official announcement from the NPP yet, the political landscape remains filled with questions. Will the party send an experienced voice back to Parliament, or will it focus on nurturing its young leadership for the 2028 state elections? The decision is expected to reflect the party’s broader strategy for the coming years.
