Meghalaya: Assam Police Arrests East Garo Hills DTO In False Document Scam

TURA: The Assam police on Saturday arrested Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills (EGH) District Transport Officer (DTO) Gene Kelly G Momin after anomalies were found in the registration of stolen vehicles and those that were tax defaulters.

According to Assam police sources, a checkpoint was set up before Agia PS in Assam’s Goalpara district on May 5 based on specific inputs. Acting on the information, one Suzuki Dezire vehicle was detained for search.

During the search, five registration certificates of different vehicles were seized from the owner of the vehicle identified as one Golam Ali @Soto, a resident of Kismatpur, Goalpara. It was found that all 6 original registration certificates were issued by the East Garo Hills DTO, Gene Kelly G Momin.

On further investigation of the documents, it was found that of the 6 original registration certificates, 5 of them were found to be made out for false engine and chassis numbers. Even the registration document for the vehicle that Golam Ali was driving and was detained by the police (ML 07 C 1786), showed a different owner. While the engine number of the vehicle was there, the chassis number was left void on the Maruti Suzuki database.

Surprised at the finding, police investigated all the registration certificates found in Ali’s car and it was revealed that 4 out of the 5 vehicle numbers had fake engine and chassis numbers, as per the database of the car companies.

The police launched a thorough investigation and it was found that the East Garo Hills DTO had issued the registration certificates without establishing the validity of the engine or chassis number of these vehicles.

Significantly, immediately after receipt of information of the arrest of one of the touts involved in the case, the office of the DTO in East Garo Hills registered a case of arson, in which several important documents were lost to the blaze.

Sources said the number of such documents based on fake engine and chassis numbers could go up to many more.
