Meghalaya: Bangladeshi Nationals Assault Two BSF Personnel Inside Indian Territory

Shillong: Two personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) were allegedly assaulted by Bangladeshi nationals inside Indian territory at Rongara in Meghalaya's South Garo Hills on Saturday.

As per BSF officials, the assaults were identified as Bipul R Sangma and Dinanath Rai from the Shillong sector, and presently both of them are out of danger.

Following the assault of its two personnel, BSF has lodged a protest with the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) and has also registered an FIR with the Meghalaya police.

"We have lodged a protest note with the BGB and lodged an FIR with the Meghalaya police," BSF Inspector General Meghalaya frontier, Inderjit Singh Rana was quoted as saying by media reports on Monday.

He further said that whenever such incidents occurred on the international border, there is a laid down policy on dealing with such unpleasant situations.

''Since it is a matter of investigation, we have lodged a protest with the BGB. We are not sure who has assaulted them,'' he added.

Notably, the highest cases of cross-border infiltration to India have been reported along the India- Bangladesh border in the last three years.

"128 infiltrations reported along Pakistan border, 1787 along Bangladesh border, 25 along Nepal border, 133 along Myanmar border while nil at China and Bhutan border," said Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Nisith Pramanik in a written reply in Lok Sabha in December last year.

Pramanik was responding to a question asked by Lok Janshakti Party MP Chirag Paswan in the Lok Sabha who had sought information on whether the number of cases of infiltration has come to light in bordering areas during the last three years or not.

Earlier in this month, at least ten Bangladeshi nationals who were apprehended for allegedly illegally entering the country were sent back to Bangladesh from the Karimganj border.
