Meghalaya bans import of pork from outside the State

Shillong: Meghalaya has banned the import of pigs from outside the State, besides issuing an advisory to pork eaters of the State not to consume the meat even if it has been tested in local farms.

Following reports of unusual mortality of pigs in numerous districts of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, top officials of the Veterinary and Animal Husbandry held a review meeting on Monday. Going by inputs that the pigs died of some flu ailments, the officials stated, “Transportation of pigs from other States into Meghalaya has been stopped until further orders.” The department also asked all government pig farms, private pig farms and pig farmers to take adequate measures for strict hygiene and bio-security such as disinfection of the farm

As per precautionary measures, the advisory stated that any signs of high fever in pigs and abnormal mortality should be brought to the notice of the authorities.

Making it clear that there is no reason to panic that a sort of swine flu is being comprehended, the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry however advised the locally produced pork should be cooked at 70 centigrade for at least 20 minutes.
