SHILLONG: Amid rising public demands for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya, State BJP president Rikman G. Momin on Saturday assured that he would personally raise the issue with the central leadership in Delhi. He emphasized that if the ILP is found to be beneficial for the state, it should be taken seriously, adding that the BJP is not avoiding the matter and will support what is best for Meghalaya.
“For the betterment of the state, if required, I will go to Delhi and request on behalf of our people,” Momin said. He also recalled that the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly had previously passed a unanimous resolution in support of ILP. “Last time, a resolution was passed in the state Assembly by all 60 legislators. The elected members passed the resolution, and the people are happy about that. It now depends on the central government and our chief minister, on how they handle the matter,” he said.
Reiterating the party’s position, Momin stated that the BJP has no hesitation in supporting ILP. “Why should BJP shy away? If it is good for the state, I think the central leaders will consider it and resolve the matter,” he said. However, he cautioned against relying solely on ILP for public safety. “Even in places where ILP exists, killings still happen. ILP alone will not stop such incidents. There needs to be a proper mechanism to address these activities,” he added.
Commenting on the recent murder case of Sonam Raghuvanshi that shocked the state, Momin praised the Meghalaya Police for their swift and effective action. “The image of the state was already tarnished, but after the police cracked the case, I salute them for their prompt action. They have saved the face of Meghalaya and demonstrated their efficiency,” he said. He also noted that while social media continues to criticize the state, the police’s action has helped restore some of its reputation.
