SHILLONG: Troops of 30 Bn BSF of Meghalaya Frontier seized a huge consignment of smartphones on February 17. These items were supposed to be smuggled from India to Bangladesh. Prima facie, the smartphones were not brand new and probably stolen from other locations.

Acting on specific input, the troops launched a special ambush in the border area of BOP Naljuri, under West Jaintia Hills. The ambush party observed that some people carrying sacks on their head were moving towards the international border. Immediately, the party challenged the miscreants. However, they managed to escape leaving behind their sacks. Searching the area, BSF troops recovered 87 smartphones. The market price of confiscated mobiles has been assessed at Rs 9,17,000, stated a release.

U.K. Nayal, DIG/PRO said, "In the past, there were similar seizures of huge mobile phones from this area. It appears that a syndicate involved in this illegal activities is operating in the area and efforts are on the bust the syndicate."
