SHILLONG: In a major crackdown against smuggling activities, Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya nabbed contraband items worth Rs. 6.11 lakh on December 18, 2024, from the Indo-Bangladesh border. The crackdown was made along the East Jaiñtia Hills (EJH) and South Garo Hills (SGH) districts.

The confiscated items, including liquor, blankets, garlic, sugar, and all sorts of other food items, were being smuggled into the country. This operation shows the BSF's constant endeavors to check illegal trade and ensure security in the sensitive border region.

In another operation, the North Garo Hills police apprehended three Assam-based persons and recovered a massive consignment of banned cough syrup in an incident last month.

The police had intercepted a vehicle at the Rari Outpost General Checkpoint (OGC) at around 2:40 pm, suspecting it was carrying illegal goods. During the search of the vehicle, officers found 10 bags of 2,500 bottles of Phensedyl cough syrup, which is a psychotropic substance.

The total seized quantity stands at 250 liters, or 250 kg. The police have also impounded a mobile phone and the Tata Magic which was used for smuggling. A formal case has been filed, and the police authorities confirm that all procedures are intact.

These are some operations of the regular efforts carried out by the law agencies to curb smuggling and illegal business in the area.
