SHILLONG: In a tragic incident that occurred on Sunday afternoon, a local businessman allegedly leaped from Umiam Bridge, leading to an ongoing search operation to retrieve his body.

The incident has been confirmed by police authorities and the authorities are currently working in collaboration with rescue teams to locate the missing individual.

The victim, P. Deb, was the proprietor of an electronic accessories store at Last Stop in Laban. Deb had left a sling bag on the bridge, which had his identification papers, police sources said. This enabled his relatives to identify him soon after the accident.

Deb, of Kench's Trace in Laban, has been missing since he jumped to his death. Teams, comprising rescue workers and local authorities, are busy sweeping the waters underneath the bridge, hoping to catch up with him. As hard as they are trying, so far no confirmatory results have been forthcoming.

The reason for Deb's suspected suicide is still unclear. The authorities have not established the reasons that led to the event, and investigations are in progress. In the meantime, the unfortunate incident has sent shockwaves throughout the local community, with many lamenting the death of the businessman.

As the search goes on, authorities are calling on people with information that may be helpful to come forward and help with the investigation.
