SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Cabinet on Friday approved revised minimum wages and enhanced cess collection to benefit over 85,000 registered labourers in the state. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma hailed the decision as a significant step for the welfare of the state's workforce.

Sangma announced that the minimum wages for labourers in various categories would see an increase. "The minimum wages for labourers falling under the highly skilled category will now get Rs 645 from Rs 586, skilled at Rs 605 from Rs 530, semi-skilled at Rs 565 from Rs 474, and unskilled at Rs 525 from Rs 419," the Chief Minister stated. He emphasized that all organizations are required to implement the revised rates, and urged individuals to submit complaints to the labour department if they face non-compliance.

Additionally, the Cabinet approved an amendment to The Meghalaya Buildings and Other Construction Workers Regulation and Employment Condition Rules, 2008. "You are aware that we are having a cess being collected, and this amount is then being used for the benefit of the labourers, who are registered with the government," Sangma explained. He highlighted that approximately 80,000 to 85,000 labourers are registered, and that the enhanced benefits will support workers with medical expenses, disability payments, and education costs for their children.

The Chief Minister confirmed that the amendment would lead to increased benefits for registered labourers, further strengthening the support provided to their families.
