SHILLONG: Meghalaya has prepared to bring out the new 'Art and Heritage Award.' The award shall be a reward for outstanding contributions in performing arts, folk music, dance, drama, theatre, and hand craftsmanship. This was settled during a recently held cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, underlining the interest of the state in celebrating the rich cultural heritage.
To make the process as transparent and justifiable as possible for the selection for the award, a committee headed by the Chief Secretary shall be constituted. Members of the department of arts and culture would constitute the said committee to ensure assessing and short-listing the artists and the contributors who would have significantly made their impact upon Meghalaya's artistic terrain. The award would be given to those who were dedicated to keeping and promoting traditions unique to the state.
In a related development, the Meghalaya Cabinet has approved an amendment to the state anthem, which will now include additional lines in the Pnar language. This change follows recommendations from the Jaintia Hills district and aims to enhance the inclusivity of Meghalaya’s diverse linguistic and cultural heritage.
The Chief Minister’s Office emphasized that these initiatives underscore the government’s dedication to fostering pride in the state’s cultural identity while promoting the ongoing development of its artistic traditions. The introduction of the ‘Art and Heritage Award’ and the revised anthem are significant steps toward recognizing and celebrating the vibrant cultural tapestry of Meghalaya.
