Shillong: The East Khasi Hills police in Meghalaya have registered a case against a man for allegedly trespassing into a church and committing acts that hurt religious sentiments. The accused, identified as Akash Sagar, reportedly entered the Mawlynnong village Church on Thursday and sang “Jai Siya Ram” at its altar.

This incident, which took place in one of the state’s most renowned tourist spots, has sparked outrage across various sections of society. A case has been filed against Sagar at the Pynursla police station, and authorities are actively investigating the matter while working to apprehend the accused.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma condemned the act, describing it as a deliberate attempt to disrupt the state’s harmony. He assured citizens that the government would take stringent measures to prevent such occurrences in the future, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and religious coexistence.

The BJP, a significant political entity in the region, has also criticized Sagar’s actions. Party spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang expressed concern over the incident, stating that it not only desecrated the sanctity of a Christian place of worship but also had the potential to deeply hurt the sentiments of Christians across Meghalaya and the nation.

The incident has drawn attention to the importance of safeguarding communal harmony in the diverse state. Social activist Angela Rangad filed a formal police complaint on the day of the incident, demanding legal action against the accused. The police have pledged a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.
