SHILLONG: The Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Meghalaya, celebrated the 15th National Voters Day on Saturday with the theme "Nothing like Voting; I vote for sure." Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashanker graced the event as the chief guest, while Chief Secretary DP Wahlang attended as the guest of honour.

The governor administered the National Voters Day pledge and commended the state for its exemplary record in peaceful elections. Addressing the gathering, he remarked, "In the issue related to elections, Meghalaya is one of the most peaceful states in the Northeast, as well as in the country."

Highlighting the challenges faced by the Election Commission in other parts of the country, the Governor stated, "Conducting elections itself is a big challenge in the country, and conducting them peacefully is an even bigger challenge. Here in Meghalaya, both of these are not at all an issue."

The Governor also underscored Meghalaya's unique harmony between democracy and indigenous traditions, saying, "Meghalaya is a beautiful state known not only for its breathtaking landscape, rich culture, and vibrant traditions but also for its strong commitment to democratic policies. One of the most remarkable aspects of democracy in Meghalaya is the deep connection between democratic principles and the indigenous communities that reside here."

Marking the occasion, he emphasized the importance of National Voters Day: "Today, as we celebrate the 15th National Voters Day, we honour the essence of democracy and the crucial role that each one of us plays in safeguarding the future of our nation."

Observed annually on January 25, National Voters Day commemorates the foundation of the Election Commission of India in 1950. Since its inception in 2011, the day aims to encourage voter participation and raise awareness about the significance of voting.

It also celebrates new voters, particularly the youth, who are honoured and presented with their Elector Photo Identity Card (EPIC) on the occasion.
