SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has reiterated that his government is committed to effectively dealing with the rampant rise of drug menace in the state, terming it "alarming" for society and especially for youth.
Speaking at the Inauguration of the First Dedicated ANTF Police Station at the Meghalaya Police Radio Organisation Training School in Golf Links, Shillong, Sangma reiterates the necessity for a holistic and united response to the crisis.
The event was graced by Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Home Affairs, Prestone Tynsong, and Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, showing that the government is taking the matter seriously. "Different departments have collaborated to combat the challenges of the drug menace, including choking supply chains, disrupting distribution networks, addressing health concerns, tackling social aspects, and ensuring rehabilitation for victims," he said.
The ANTF Police Station would be one of the cornerstones in the anti-drug programs of the state. With officers from all ranks from the Superintendent of Police (ANTF), Assistant or Deputy Superintendents, Inspectors, Sub-Inspectors, and other employees, coordination and efficiency at the operational level would improve significantly.
In his speech, the Chief Minister stressed that there must be a compassionate approach to people affected by drug addiction. He said that all departments involved in the war against drugs are being reshuffled to adopt a more humanitarian approach so that victims will get the support and rehabilitation they need.
Chief Minister Sangma expressed optimism that the ANTF would prove to be a significant asset in the fight against drugs in the state. He urged the community members to actively participate in the government's efforts, saying that public cooperation is vital in winning the war against drugs.
The community has a very crucial role to play in this battle. Together, we can overcome this challenge and create a safer and healthier society," Sangma added.
