SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated the Mawhati C&RD Block at a program held at Umsohliat on Saturday.
In his inaugural address, the Chief Minister highlighted the government's commitment to decentralizing administration and ensuring accessibility for the people of Mawhati. "There were close to one lakh people under the Umsning C&RD Block, and many had to travel over 100 kilometres to access a block office. This government felt the need for change, and today's inauguration is a reflection of our commitment to bring services and facilities closer to the people," he said.
He added that the Mawhati Block would not only benefit the residents of Mawhati but also provide relief to Umsning, as 66 villages from Umsning now fall under the new block. He emphasized the government's ongoing efforts to implement administrative reforms, stating, "We are exploring the possibility of providing various government services through block offices instead of requiring people to travel to sub-divisions or district headquarters."
The Chief Minister assured that sanctions for the block office would be expedited to ensure the immediate functioning of the Mawhati Block. He also discussed upcoming development projects, including the Umsning-Mawhati road, which will serve as a vital economic and administrative corridor. Urging cooperation from the community, he called on officials to deliver services with empathy and dedication.
Minister of C&RD Abu Taher Mondol, in his address, stated that the new block would transform the region's economic activities. "This block will not only bring administration closer to the people but also create livelihood opportunities. To achieve the $10 billion economy target, rural Meghalaya's economy must grow. Blocks like Mawhati are pivotal for ensuring that government machinery reaches the grassroots and provides the necessary technical and financial support for development missions," he said.
Mawhati MLA Charles Marngar described the Mawhati C&RD Block as a symbol of progress, hope, and a brighter future. "This block will uplift communities, foster development, and enhance lives by introducing government programmes related to health, education, and infrastructure in Mawhati. It is a testament to collective effort and a milestone for the constituency," he said, expressing gratitude to the government.
The event was attended by Minister of C&RD Abu Taher Mondol, Mawhati MLA Charles Marngar, and Umsning MLA Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh.
