SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma is set to meet his Assam counterpart, Himanta Biswa Sarma, after the upcoming district council elections to address the unresolved interstate border disputes in the remaining six areas. Sangma on Wednesday said he had an informal conversation with Sarma, who requested he propose dates for the meeting after the elections.

The second phase of border talks between the two neighboring states has been on hold for more than two years, with Assam reportedly showing little interest in resuming discussions. This delay persists despite both states having formed regional committees to address the long-standing boundary dispute.

Sangma expressed hope that the post-election discussions would bring progress in resolving the remaining issues, building upon the foundation laid during previous negotiations.

When asked about the ongoing dialogue between the two states, Sangma emphasized the importance of communication. “We are discussing issues between two states, not two countries. These are two states within one nation, and it is only through dialogue that we can resolve matters. We share a good relationship with Assam and Delhi, which helps in addressing most of our concerns,” he noted.

“This is a complicated issue with many challenges, and resolving it takes time. However, we have found a way forward, and with continued efforts, we hope to resolve most of the outstanding issues,” he said.
