SHILLONG: A delegation of the Meghalaya Congress Party led by the Leader of Opposition, Mukul Sangma met Governor Satya Pal Malik at the Raj Bhawan here on Thursday to impress upon him the urgency to introduce the Inner Line permit (ILP) in the State besides implementation of the 'Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act' (MRSSA) — a law enacted by his erstwhile government.

Sangma, accompanied by the other party legislators, also submitted a two-page memorandum on the issues by citing the demand by also the NGOs, especially the student groups.

Speaking to newspersons soon after the meeting with the Governor, Sangma said, ''After an in-depth analysis of the rising demands of the State's premier social organizations for introduction of ILP following the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), we requested the Governor to initiate the measures on his end."

Pointing out that the demand for introduction of ILP to check influx of illegal immigrants into the State was made through the unanimous decision of the Meghalaya Assembly, Sangma blamed the present dispensation of not pursuing the case with the Centre as it should have been done.

The former Chief Minister further highlighted his government's initiative to bring in the MRSSA.''The present government has not implemented the Act. Instead, it brought about an amendment; and this is still lying with the Governor," stated Sangma.

He demanded that the State overnment must immediately recall the amendment to ensure steadfast implementations of the Act passed by the State Assembly in May 2016. The Leader of the Opposition further claimed that during his tenure,various administrative reforms were taken to ensure the implementation of the Act, and rued that the present government has failed to take off on the legislation from where they had left.
