MENDIPATHAR: In a move seen as both symbolic and strategic, the Congress is attempting to script a political comeback in the Garo Hills ahead of next year’s Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections.
Led by Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Vincent H. Pala and Tura MP Saleng A. Sangma, the party inaugurated its new Congress Bhawan in Mendipathar on Friday. The event is being interpreted as the party’s first concrete step toward rebuilding its organisational base in a region where its presence has diminished, with no MLA or MDC currently representing it.
The participation of Saleng A. Sangma was viewed as a calculated projection of strength, as the Congress attempts to reclaim its traditional vote bank and counter the influence of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) and the steadily expanding Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Political observers suggest the inauguration marks more than a routine party ritual. Instead, it is seen as an effort to re-establish visibility, rebuild cadre strength, and project the Congress as a viable alternative in Meghalaya’s shifting political landscape.
The upcoming GHADC elections will serve as a litmus test for Saleng A. Sangma’s leadership following his victory as Tura MP. A strong showing could revive the Congress’s fortunes in the state, while a poor performance would only deepen its marginalisation.
“The Bhawan will stand as a beacon of service, unity, and commitment to the people,” the MPCC wrote on social media, framing the inauguration as the dawn of a new chapter in the party’s fight for political relevance in Meghalaya.
